French farmers and seedmakers appeal government MON810 maize ban

French maize growers and seed companies appealed a ban on the cultivation of a strain of genetically modified maize to the country's highest court on Thursday, saying it was unjustified and economically harmful for farmers. France bans strain of Monsanto GM maize

French Agricultural Minister Bruno Le Maire imposed Friday a temporary ban on a genetically modified strain of maize made by US company Monsanto "to protect the environment". The French agriculture ministry said in a statement that the Monsanto maize strain MON 810 had been banned as a "precautionary measure". France's top administrative court in November overturned a government order banning French farmers from planting genetically modified crops from Monsanto. However, President Nicolas Sarkozy swiftly pledged to seek new legal measures after the French ruling as well as a similar decision by the European Court of Justice.

French scientists: 30 per cent pesticide reduction possible without GE crops and yield losses

France is currently leading attempts in Europe to scale-back agricultural chemical use, attempting to halve the amount of chemical inputs used in the country by 2018. However, French farmers have reacted strongly to the targets, which they claim will affect their production. [...] To support the targets, scientists at two of INRA’s research units have demonstrated, using modelling techniques, that the country can achieve a 30 per cent reduction in pesticide use on arable crops without impacting on either yields or farm income.

French seed group Vilmorin tests GM maize in Europe

French seed group Vilmorin is testing genetically modified maize in Europe, despite widespread hostility in the region to GM crops, as it expects the benefits of such varieties eventually to lead to their acceptance, the company said. Vilmorin has folded its GM maize research into a joint venture with German peer KWS SAAT, and the partners could market their own GM varieties as soon as 2014, Chief Executive Emmanuel Rougier said on Thursday.

France to restore GMO maize ban within days: ministry

France will reinstate a ban on the cultivation of Monsanto’s MON810 maize in the next few days, in time to prevent the genetically modified grain being sown this year, an official at the farm ministry said on Tuesday. Paris banned MON810 maize in 2008, citing environmental risks. The decision was overturned by the country’s highest court in November on the basis that it was not sufficiently justified, leading the government to say it would look at all ways to maintain the freeze.

France asks EU to suspend GM crop authorisation

France's ecology ministry said Monday it had asked European regulators to suspend authorisation for the use of genetically modified MON 810 maize crops from US company Monsanto based on new studies. The request is "based on the latest scientific studies" which show that the use of the GM crops "pose significant risks for the environment," the ministry said in a statement. The ministry pointed to a recent study by the European Food Safety Authority that raised concerns with another form of GM crop, BT11, that it said could also be applied to MON 810.

Agriculture’s Monsanto beat the tech giants

Investors looking for growth in the safety of blue-chips tend to love tech stocks, where a single invention like the iPhone or an Xbox can crank up the share price of even a gigantic company. But those who believe in the power of patents might also check out Monsanto, a farming stock that performs very much like a good big-tech holding. Certainly, shares hold their own in performance comparisons. Monsanto’s market cap, now above $42 billion, beat most of the big-tech stocks on five-year returns.
