Genetically modified products and the draft concerning the issue were the main subjects of debate for the opposition and majority during the parliamentary session on December 7. Genetically modified products are being sold in the country without any special marks indicating this, for which the opposition blames the authorities and is awaiting an explanation from the Government. According to the resolution made by the Georgian Parliament’s on March 26, the authorities must present a draft on the spread and use of GM products within 6 months.

Christian Democratic Party of Georgia will focus on the problem of the genetically modified products at the meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and the experts of the sphere. The opposition party believes special legislative base should guarantee control of the GM products in Georgia.

In his Easter sermon, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II emphasized the need for a better work ethic in Georgia. [...] He also spoke out against genetically-modified crops, which he said would have harmful effects for both the environment and people. [...] He added that developing a GM-free agricultural sector would make Georgian products more popular, given the high demand for organic goods.

On 12-13 December 2006 the Greens Movement of Georgia / Friends of the Earth – Georgia organized series of eco-seminars for schools of Borjomi town, Samtskhe-Javakheti Region on the issues of genetically modified organisms. After the eco-seminars the improvised action was arranged with the participation of pupils from all 6 schools of Borjomi town, which resulted with declaration of Borjomi schools GM-Free.
