A study conducted by the Croatian Food Agency (HAH) shows that few Croatians worry too much about calories (eight per cent), but a greater number is concerned about traces of pesticides (25 per cent) and genetically modified organisms (20 per cent). [...] The head of HAH Zorica Jurkovic says that this is the only such research - on perception of risks associated with food consumption - conducted in a non-EU member state.

Representatives of the Croatian Parliament’s Environmental Protection Committee met with their Austrian counterparts in Vienna on Tuesday to discuss the establishment of a GMO-free zone in Alpe-Adria region. The President of the Croatian Committee Marijana Petir spoke about the creation of an area free of genetically modified organisms in order to protect the biological diversity of the region.

Newly elected Croatian Agriculture Association head Zeljko Mavrovic has come out in opposition to the use of genetically-modified organisms in Croatia. Mavrovic, a retired boxer turned entrepreneur, called GMO ”seeds of evil and deceit” [...] He held a press conference just before the start of a workshop on the subject of the possible coexistence of GMO and ecological agriculture conducted by Brit Jeremy Sweet.

At a press conference today, HSP requested the withdrawal of the Cabinet’s proposed law, which would allow the import of genetically modified seeds and food for animals. The law, as it was said, was supposed to be voted in an urgent session, and was make according to the recommendations of the European Commission. HSP thinks that the import of such food would be very harmful for Croatia.
