AFTER 10 years of campaigning, the Cyprus Greens emerged victorious before the Parliament closed its doors prior to elections. A law regarding Genetically Modified Organism products was passed stipulating that any product containing GMOs must be placed on separate shelving in supermarkets. This is a European first and the Cyprus Greens aspire to more. We hope this will mean the banning of GMO crops in Cyprus, the Mediterranean and Europe.

CYPRUS’ Friends of the Earth have joined Greenpeace and Save our Souls (SOS) in a pan-European campaign against Genetically Modified Organism cultivation within Europe. [...] The US Embassy reportedly sent a warning letter shortly after the bill [for segregation of products with GMO content on supermarket shelves] was proposed, stating that approval could hurt US-Cyprus relations by ”stigmatizing” GM products. The bill is currently still under consideration.

CYPRUS RISKS a hefty fine from the European Union over its embargo on biofuel produced from genetically modified organisms (GMOs), Parliament heard yesterday. THE COMMERCE Ministry is pushing the House of Representatives to amend a 2005 law banning the sale of biofuels made from genetically-modified (GM) plants, in order to avoid being fined millions of euros by the EU for non-compliance with one of its directives. The European Commission (EC) asked the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on 28 May this year for a ruling that, by enacting a law containing the specific banning clause without previously notifying the EC, Cyprus is in breach of its obligations under EU Directive 98/34/EC.

THE GREEN Party has called President Demetris Christofias to meet his pre-election promise of proclaiming Cyprus a genetically-modified-free country. According to the Greens, no progress has been made on GMOs eight months after President Christofias took office, because of the inactivity of the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Environmental campaigners in Cyprus accused the government of yielding to American influence on Wednesday by refusing to endorse ground-breaking legislation forcing retailers to segregate GMO food. President Tassos Papadopoulos has referred the law, passed by parliament on June 14, to the Supreme Court, effectively freezing its application until the court convenes to assess its legality. That is not expected to occur before the autumn.

PARLIAMENT yesterday refused to acknowledge a veto by President Tassos Papadopoulos on the stacking of products with Genetically Modified (GM) content on separate supermarket shelves, the Green Party said. A bill providing for separate display was passed by Parliament on June 14 but was vetoed by the President, who said it would have to be amended. The bill had been before Parliament for two years and when it was passed it made Cyprus the first EU country to create such a law.

Answering to questions regarding Genetically Modified Organisms and Cyprus’ intention to declare itself a GMO free area, she said that this can be done without any previous approval by the EU. ”If Cyprus wants to declare itself GMO free this will depend on the support from the farmers. If a voluntary agreement can be made, then this is possible. But it is not possible to introduce a compulsory or legislative proposal that prohibits the farmers to use GMO production”, she said.
