Alternattiva Demokratika called upon the Maltese government to register its opposition, as the proposal will facilitate access of Genetically Modified Organisms in the EU and Malta. Spokesperson on agriculture and animal welfare Simon Galea said: ”AD strongly believes that GMO cultivation should be banned from the EU territory and Malta has a role to play in this regard, where it can declare itself a GMO-free territory and oppose the European Commission’s proposals.

The face of European Commissioner John Dalli has been splashed on billboards across Brussels’ main streets with the slogan GMOs Coming Soon To A Table Near You, as part of a campaign by Greenpeace. Mr Dalli has suddenly become one of the most recognised EU officials in Brussels and is sharing a billboard with Commission President José Manuel Barroso as spoof chefs cooking up genetically engineered ”recipes for disaster”.

”The Commission has decided today to authorise the cultivation of a Genetically Modified potato, known as Amflora, and which is intended for use in the production of starch for the paper industry, as well as the use of its starch by-products as feed,” Dalli said at a press conference yesterday aimed at reassuring Europe’s many GM sceptics.

During the Environment Council meeting, Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs George Pullicino, representing the Prime Minister, who is responsible for the environment, questioned the current EU process to authorise the cultivation of GMOs. Mr Pullicino called for a new process that would allow member states a freer hand in deciding on these matters at local level. He stressed that decisions would be able to factor in local specificities, allowing European citizens to better understand the decisions.

The Public Health Department yesterday warned the public against consuming Blue Ribbon Golden Parboiled Long Grain Enriched Rice and Uncle Ben’s Enriched Parboiled Long Grain Rice, due to the presence of Genetically Modified Organisms which is unauthorised in the EU.
