The total surface area of land cultivated with genetically modified corn in Romania moves downwardly and most likely this year there will be 300 less hectares cultivated with GM corn, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Stelian Fuia said on Monday on occasion of the inauguration of the new headquarters of the National Research Development Institute for Food Bioresources - IBA Bucharest. On the other hand, Stelian Fuia said the legislation will be amended in order to sort out the problem of the taxation of registered agricultural devices.

Romania will present a clear position on the cultivation of genetically modified organisms at the meeting of European Union environmental ministers scheduled for March 8-9 in Brussels, Romanian Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Stelian Fuia reports. [...] Fuia worked eight years with the US company Monsanto, a GMO producer, as a regional executive. Former Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabara, himself a big advocate of the GMOs and biotechnologies, believes the soybean to be an important step forward toward strengthening Romania’s exports capabilities, as such soybean may be exported all over the world, less so to the US and Brazil.

Romania will seek the agreement of the European Union in order to cultivate and export genetically modified soybean starting 2012, said the Romanian Minister of Agriculture, Valeriu Tabara. ”We make every effort this year and hope to have the agreement of the European Union” said Valeriu Tabara, adding that soybean represents an important step to strengthen Romania’s export capacity.

Romania’s Agriculture Ministry is pushing Brussels to allow recultivation of genetically modified crops - but opposition groups are lining up economic arguments against their development. Romania’s agriculture could return to becoming a major cultivator of genetically modified organisms, if new European Union legislation passes. Bucharest loses $131,000,000 annually because it does not cultivate genetically modified soy and imports it from Brazil for its animal farms. Romania’s National Federation of Farm Producers has urged the European Union to introduce genetically modified crops in the wake of high soybean demand worldwide. Federation Chairman Viorel Matei said Wednesday the EU should come out of its conservative attitude that is hindering the economic prosperity of the continent in the absence of new technologies.

A huge row is about to set the ruling coalition ablaze [...] The minister of Environment, Laszlo Borbely (UDMR) signed a note that bans for at least five years the use of genetically altered plants, but his initiative has met the strong opposition of Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabara (PDL), ‘Evz’ reports. The Democrat Liberal minister actually is a well-known advocate of genetically modified organisms, as he collaborated in the past with Monsanto - the world’s biggest producer of such organisms.

According to a national opinion poll from in April, this year, 81,5% of Romanians want the Romanian authorities to ban genetically modified organisms and 74,1% don’t want to consume genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified organisms have been a problem for Romania for more than 10 years
