A bill to introduce compulsory registration of all products containing GM-components is in the final stages of adoption by the Russian parliament. [...] “Already 10 varieties of genetically modified crops have passed certification in Russia. And these are only crops that have been in use for a long time abroad without any negative consequences for human health. I think that GM crops are already cultivated in Russia, but until now this area has not been under our control” - Nikolai Vlasov Deputy Head of Russian veterinary watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor report.

The report said: “Chemical composition of corn genetically modified maize NK603 is equivalent to its conventional counterpart; CP4 EPSPS protein is neither toxic to humans nor is an allergen; medical and biological research of genetically modified maize NK603 conducted during its official registration in the Russian Federation reveals absence of any toxic, genotoxic, sensitization, allergic and immune-modulating action, and compositional equivalence with its conventional counterpart.” [...] Over the entire period of use no adverse effects of genetically modified maize NK603 on human health were found.

Russia needs to enter a five-year moratorium on the use of GMO food products and growing of GMP plants. This is required to enable preparation and adoption of laws to control the content of GMOs. Otherwise, after the entry into the WTO, Russia will be at risk of losing its own seeds and livestock breeds that will be displaced by transgenes. One of the arguments proponents of GMO products usually use is a very short period of their use - 20 years, and consequent lack of a sufficient basis for any conclusions. In fact, studies of the effect of GMOs are being conducted. However, their results are either hidden from the public or altered in some way. Companies behind GMO products are serious forces with a great deal of political and financial weight.

The Russian scientists, who oppose genetically modified organisms in food, expect that their year-long experiment will show whether the controversial cultivation process has effects as dangerous as French revelations claimed on September 19. [...] Russian researches from the National Association for Genetic Safety (NAGS) believe such experiments should be conducted publicly, so that people can see the process with their own eyes, and thus trust, or not, the study. So they came up with the idea of public experiment. Web cameras, installed in cages with rats, will broadcast all stages of the experiment online. The unique reality show will be available on the Internet 24/7 worldwide.
”This is a unique experiment,” project author Elena Sharoykina told RT. ”There hasn't been anything like it before – open, public research by opponents and supporters of GMO.”

Myth #1. GMO foods can trigger cancer. Transgenes tend to get integrated into the genes of intestinal microorganisms, and this is a mutation. It is known that cell mutations lead to the development of cancer cells. This is an absolute lie. GMOs cannot be integrated anywhere because of a simple reason - they disintegrate in the body into harmless parts in the first few minutes after entering the stomach. Maximum 20 minutes - and those little bundles of genetic chains are already dispersed, impersonal and become building blocks for our body.

Russian dairy goats can produce milk containing human protein. Several cubs with a human genome in their DNA were born at a farm in the Moscow region’s Shakhovsky district as part of a joint Russian-Belarus research project. Five years have passed since scientists from Russia and Belarus started experiments to obtain goat milk containing lactoferrin. This human breast milk element protects a baby from viruses and bacteria while its own immune system develops.
