Public pressure halts GE pharma crop trials in Spain

Friends of the Earth Spain celebrates the suspension of GM trials with human genes after mass mobilisations by the general public. Valencia’s local government has revoked the permit of an Italian pharmaceutical company to experiment with GM rice combined with human genes in Vinaros, Castellon. [...] The aim of the GM trial was to obtain enzymes to treat Gaucher’s disease. An impossible coexistence: Transgenic and organic agriculture in Spain

The cultivation of genetically modified maize has caused a drastic reduction in organic cultivations of this grain and is making their coexistence practically impossible. This is the main conclusion reached in one of the first field studies in Europe carried out by a researcher of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, who has analysed the situation in Catalonia and Aragon, Europe’s main producers of transgenic foods.

Spain unloads first bulk U.S. maize in 12 years

Spain has received its first bulk maize cargo from from the United States in at least 12 years, trade data show, a sign that European trade rules over genetically-modified organisms may be relaxing. [...] Trade concern over the European Union's zero-tolerance stance grew last year, however, when entry of U.S. soy cargoes to Europe was blocked after they were found to contain minute traces of GM maize strains not approved in Brussels. The 27-country-bloc now plans to allow a low level presence of 0.1 percent of unauthorised GM imports of animal feed, but not human food.

Spanish GE crop researcher confident that EU will accept GE crops

Dr. Paul Christou of the University of Lleida in Spain said he has been part of a team that works to introduce genes into corn, causing the plant to produce higher levels of multiple nutrients. [...] Christou said the European Union has decided to ban fungicides on wheat in five years. ”I suspect that in several years, there won’t be many wheat farmers in Europe,” he said. A genetically engineered corn has the potential to produce a substance that could be used to prevent the transmission of the AIDS virus, Christou said. But he said resistance against transgenic crops has prevented it from being studied fully.
