Scottland starts public consultation on GM co-existence
Scottlands first minister Jack McConnell has launched a public consultation on "a proposed co-existence regime for Scotland that would aim to minimise any unwanted GM presence in non-GM crops". A spokesperson said this was "very much the start of the process".

Sweden: Greenpeace action against GM feed
Greenpeace activists this morning started an action against the Swedish company Swedish Meats. Greenpeace wants to inform that Swedish Meats has allowed the use of genetically modified animal feed.

Krakow Declaration for a GMO-free Europe
The participants of the conference entitled "A United No to GMO" held in the City of Krakow-Kalwaria, on February 24-25th, 2006, accepted a KRAKOW DECLARATION where they called upon all National Governments and the European Commission to respect the voice of their citizen's and to halt all imports, sales and planting of genetically modified foods and seeds.

EU: New Coexistence Report Published
The European Commission?s Joint Research Centre just published case studies to identify how farmers can reduce the ?adventitious? ? unintended and unavoidable ? presence of GM material in non-GM harvests. The objective of the report is to provide a science-based reference to support any future design and implementation of coexistence measures within the EU.

Austria to reopen EU GM debate
Writing in the latest issue of Parliament Magazine, Austrian agriculture and environment minister, Joseph Proell said he will ask national environment ministers meeting in Brussels on March 9 to take another look at the EU´s GM authorisation procedures.
"The Austrian presidency will initiate another debate on the longstanding practice of approving GMOs when no qualified majority is reached,"
said Proell.

EU: GMO Co-Existence - Report being finalised
The long-awaited Commission report on GM co-existence is expected to be adopted by the Commission College at the end of February (or March at the latest), officials have indicated this week, with a Council working group planned by the
Austrian Presidency on March 22, ahead of the April 4-6 Conference on co-existence in Vienna.

Romania bans GM soybean growing
The Romanian government has decided toban the growing of Roundup Ready soybeans from 1. January 2007. Permits to continue growing in 2006 will be given only under special conditions. This is a major blow to Monsanto's strategy to use the country, where last year around 140.000 hectares were planted to the GM soybeans, as a hub to introduce GMO cultivation in Europe.

French GMO law proposed
France is proposing a new law that would effectively absolve the government of financial responsibility for contamination caused by genetically modified (GMO) crops, a move condemned by environmental groups. A French poll published on Tuesday by a coalition of environmental and farming groups showed 78 percent of those questioned would like a temporary ban on GMOs to evaluate their health and environmental impact.

WTO Found EU GMO Moratorium Violated Trade Rule
